Motorcycle Helmet Quick Release Buckle

A new product development for a comcact helmet buckle suitable for conventional and full-face helmet styles.

The buckle was designed for low cost-high volume manufacture using moulded and pressed components.

The design requirements were to produce a miniature buckle with a push-button release using the minimum number of components. The release button was to be easily operated wearing heavy motorcycle gloves.

The design uses a combination of moulded ABS components for the housing  and button and pressed stainless steel components for the clasp and tongue.

The tongue consists of a half shear tag, which engages into a slot on the clasp. The clasp is held in position by a flat stainless steel spring.
The assembly uses no fasteners or tools. The locking components are located within the moulded base.

The release button is located into the body and slid onto the base which features permanent locking tags to prevent the unit from being opened.

The tongue is fitted with an adjusting bar and attached to the free part of the helmet strap.

The completed assembly was tested to BS6658 and was granted the BSI kite mark.

Design documentation was completed using conventional 2D draughting. The design was later upgraded and modelled in 3D using Mechanical Desktop.
